Why the jab decides fights
The jab is the most used and most underrated punch. Who controls the jab controls distance, rhythm and the read on the opponent.
The kinetic chain
- Drive from the lead foot — the punch starts from the ground, not the shoulder.
- Arm extension — the fist travels in a straight line, elbow stays low.
- Minimal shoulder rotation — at full extension the shoulder shields the chin.
- Immediate return — the hand comes back to guard faster than it left.
Golden rule: *the jab doesn't end when it lands, it ends when the hand is home.*
The 3 mistakes that ruin the jab
- Telegraphing: loading the punch by pulling the shoulder back. The opponent reads everything.
- Dropping the rear hand: as the jab fires, the right must stay glued to the cheekbone.
- Planting the feet: a jab without foot drive is just an extended arm.
Practical drill
3 rounds of 3 minutes on the bag: 20 single jabs, 20 double jabs, 20 jab + lateral step. Film yourself from the side and check the return to guard.
Disclaimer: train progressively. If you feel joint pain, stop and consult a professional.
