The first step is the most important
Starting boxing doesn't require natural talent: it requires consistency and the right basics. Here's how to begin without wasting time or money.
The essential gear (and nothing else, at first)
- Hand wraps — essential from day one.
- Gloves 12-16 oz to start.
- Comfortable clothing and a water bottle.
Don't buy everything at once: many gyms lend gear for your first classes.
What to expect in the first month
- Week 1-2: you'll learn the guard and basic footwork. It'll feel weird, that's normal.
- Week 3-4: your first punches (jab, cross) and slow combinations on the bag.
Don't expect to "fight" right away: boxing is built from the fundamentals.
The first 3 fundamentals to train
- The guard: hands high, elbows tight, chin down. It's your home.
- The jab: the most important punch, it manages distance and rhythm.
- Footwork: moving while staying balanced. Boxing is won with the feet.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Holding your breath when you punch
- Dropping your hands after a shot
- Wanting to hit hard before hitting well
The first 30-day plan
Train 3 times a week: 2 gym sessions + 1 shadow boxing or conditioning at home. Film yourself once a week to see progress.
Once you have the basics, our Striker Blueprint guides you with a round timer, combinations and progress tracking.
Disclaimer: always warm up and progress gradually. If you feel pain or dizziness, stop and, if needed, consult a professional.
